When comparing cabinets, the material of the box is one of the clearest indicators of long-term quality, and it is often hidden behind identical-looking doors. The two most common box materials are particleboard and plywood. They behave very differently over a cabinet's life. Here is how they compare on the factors that matter.
What each material actually is
Particleboard is made from wood chips and sawdust bound with resin and pressed into flat sheets. It is uniform, smooth, and inexpensive. Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a denser, finer cousin of the same family.
Plywood is made from thin layers of real wood veneer glued with alternating grain direction. This construction gives it strength and stability that engineered chip-based panels cannot match. Both are manufactured panels, but their internal structure is worlds apart.
Strength and screw holding
Plywood holds screws far better than particleboard. Because particleboard is loose chips bound by resin, screws can strip out or pull free over time, especially at hinges and drawer slides that take repeated stress. Plywood's continuous wood layers grip fasteners securely and resist this loosening.
This matters most exactly where cabinets work hardest, the door hinges and drawer hardware. A particleboard box can sag or fail at these points years before the doors themselves wear out.
Moisture resistance
This is the decisive difference in a kitchen or bathroom. Particleboard absorbs water readily. A leak under a sink or standing moisture along a base can cause it to swell, crumble, and lose all strength, and the damage is permanent. Plywood is far more resistant. It can tolerate occasional moisture and dry out without disintegrating.

Weight, sag, and span
Particleboard is heavy and prone to sagging over long unsupported spans, such as wide shelves carrying dishes or books. Plywood is lighter for its strength and resists deflection, holding a flat line over longer runs. For cabinets with heavy loads or wide shelving, plywood keeps its shape where particleboard slowly bows.
When particleboard is acceptable
Particleboard is not always the wrong choice. For low-cost projects, dry environments, light loads, and cabinets that will be replaced within a known timeframe, it offers a smooth, stable, affordable surface. A laundry cabinet or a rental upgrade may not justify the cost of plywood.
The long-term verdict
