Custom Wood Window Grilles and Divided Lite Patterns
A guide to custom wood window grilles and the divided lite options that define them.
Custom Wood Window Grilles and Divided Lite Patterns
Grilles are the slender bars that divide a window into smaller panes, and they do more visual work than almost any other window detail. The pattern and construction of these dividers, known as divided lite, can make a window feel historic, modern, or somewhere in between. Understanding the options is the first step to specifying them well.
What Divided Lite Means
In early windows, large panes of glass were expensive or impossible to make, so windows were assembled from many small panes held by wood bars called muntins. Each small pane is a lite, and a window built this way is divided lite. The look became so associated with quality and tradition that it endured long after large glass became affordable.
Today divided lite is a design choice rather than a necessity, but the visual logic remains. The grille pattern sets the window's character and ties it to the architectural style of the home.
True Divided Lite Versus Simulated
There are three main approaches, and the difference matters. True divided lite uses individual panes of glass separated by structural muntins, exactly as historic windows were built. It is the most authentic and the most costly, and it slightly reduces energy performance because each small pane has its own edge.
Simulated divided lite uses a single insulated glass unit with muntin bars applied to the exterior and interior surfaces, ideally with a matching spacer bar between the panes. Done well, with an interior spacer, it is nearly indistinguishable from true divided lite while preserving energy efficiency. The third option, grilles between the glass, places bars inside the sealed unit; it is the most affordable but reads flat because it casts no shadow.
Choosing a Pattern
The grille pattern should answer to the architecture. Six over six and twelve over twelve patterns suit traditional and colonial homes. Two over two and prairie patterns lean transitional. Minimal or absent grilles suit modern and contemporary designs. The width of the muntin also shifts the feel: slimmer bars read more refined and modern, wider bars more traditional.
Custom work allows patterns tailored to a specific elevation rather than chosen from a stock menu. Vertical Custom Supply builds wood window grilles where the muntin profile and pattern are designed to the architecture, with the shadow line that gives divided lite its depth.
Specifying with Confidence
Decide first whether authenticity or energy performance leads, which narrows the construction method. Then choose a pattern and muntin width that match the home's style and proportions. Finally, confirm the profile in a physical sample, since the play of light on a real muntin is what the eye ultimately responds to.
Custom wood window grilles are a small detail with outsized impact. Matched thoughtfully to construction method, pattern, and proportion, they give a window the character that defines an entire facade.
